This is your Good Word Reflection for October 10 - 13, 2008

Historically, Christianity is made up of saints and sinners. We recognize this as the realistic model of all institutions. But though we say: “here comes everyone”, not all will persevere nor be acceptable. A change of heart, a conversion to appreciating the gifts of the kingdom is required. Many call themselves Christians, but far less practices their commitment.

In the Gospel for this weekend, Matthew’s story unfolds in three acts. The first is a call to the proper guests, the second act is a call to the outcasts, and the third act is the necessity to sort out the guests that have been invited.

Matthew distinguishes between the initial call of salvation and final perseverance. Just because you are called you are not automatically invited to stay. Matthew warns against complacency and calls us to continual “metanoia”, a changing of our heart (and values) to God.
